Monitor Remote Equipment Inexpensively

_monitor_remote_equipment_inexpensively_64

Use this method to make your life a bit more productive. When I have setup a job on the CNC machine I used to babysit the machine to make sure nothing bad would happen and a few times I was very glad I was sitting there. Usually it was a mistake that I made which caused issues. However it’s such a waste of time sitting beside a dusty and loud machine but I didn’t feel comfortable leaving it on its own for more than a minute or two. My initial thought was to install an IP camera and just plug it into the network to allow me to keep my eye on what was going on. Once I looked at the cost of an IP camera that idea fizzled out.

My next thought was to use a cheap USB cam but they are limited in distance, the CNC location is about 30 or 40 feet away from the office so that would too far for normal USB. I found these cool Ethernet USB extensions which will allow you to stretch your USB port up to 150 feet away from your computer (I accidentally said 300 in the video but it isn’t quite as long as normal Ethernet can go). Plugging in a cheap web cam into the computer using the Ethernet extender worked great!

Now to make things even more flexible the Yawcam software that I was using has a cool streaming feature, this allows you to setup a port on your computer so that other devices (or computers) on your network can view the stream. All I needed to do was type in the IP address of the laptop into the browser bar of the iPod Touch with the port number and bingo there was the wireless live picture of the CNC in action.

Monitoring the machine with a reassuring glance is so much better than sitting beside it and I am still very close if something needs attention in a hurry.

Items you need to make this work.

“Bloody Tears” mixed with Tupac’s...

“Bloody Tears” mixed with Tupac’s “Realist Killaz” by Rainyphase. This mix is from 2007, but I hadn’t heard it until OSV posted it last night. Not bad!

After listening to this, I realized that with a new Castlevania game out, there must be new versions of “Bloody Tears,” “Vampire Killer,” and other standards to listen to… and then I read this other OSV post, which reveals that none of the Castlevania standards appear.. As much as I don’t want to be the kind of person who dismisses a new game for not adhering to every aspect of its predecessors, I can’t deny feeling some disappointment. I mean, I was about to listen to that on YouTube, and now what am I going to do?

Dead Space 2 collector's edition with replica plasma cutter leaked

According to a (since removed) image found on Amazon and now posted on Examiner, the collector's edition of Dead Space 2 will include a life-size toy Plasma Cutter, in addition to a soundtrack CD, a DLC voucher, and a piece of artwork. EA announced its intention to produce a collector's edition for the sequel way back in January, when it sought ideas for pack-in items from fans. The plasma cutter happened to be on the list even then -- and we called it "outrageous."

Being a sort-of leaked item, EA hasn't officially announced its existence, and thus no information about its price is known.

Verizon Getting the iPhone in 2011, Wall Street Journal Reports

Girl Rolling EyesAccording to the Wall Street Journal, which is apparently talking to "people familiar with the matter," Apple will soon begin mass producing a new iPhoneVerizon's network in early 2011 that will land on . As we've come to expect from these frequent rumors of impending Verizon iPhonedom, details are incredibly scarce. It's unknown if the unicorn-like Verizon iPhone will be based on the iPhone 4 or the older 3GS. All that is known is that it will work on CDMA networks, and that it is distinctly different from the next-gen AT&T iPhone that is already in the design stages. Losing iPhone exclusivity could seriously hurt AT&T, but expanding beyond the troubled provider would be a boon for Apple.

Look, we're getting tired of the Verizon iPhone rumor-mongering. Yes, it will inevitably happen at some point; we can all agree on that. But every six months some "trusted source" or "source close to the project" comes forward to say the iPhone is coming to Verizon in just a couple of months, nay, a couple of weeks. And like the ravenous jackals they (we) are, the press jumps all over the (usually questionable and incredibly vague) report for fear of missing out on the story. And in the end we just end up as another cog in the Apple marketing machine, rather than as reporters of serious news. Until it's officially announced, can we just give it a break?

How to Get Your Verizon Refund

man holding cashOkay, so Verizon's agreed to pay $90 million to customers who have incurred erroneous data charges over the past three years. But, what can affected users do to make sure they actually receive their cash? In theory, nothing. The company says that it's currently going through its database to find users who should receive refunds, which will apparently appear in the form of credits on their forthcoming monthly phone bills. Former customers, meanwhile, will receive a refund check in the mail.

Some, however, may not be very willing to trust the accounting practices of a company that reportedly overlooked $90 million in frivolous data charges. At this point, Verizon has only stated that it will "provide more guidance" to customers who feel they were slighted, but said "guidance" could be nothing more than another customer service number.

Missed out on the limited run of Windows 7 Family Packs back in July of last year? You aren't alone. Zombie-Killing Fun Coming To Mac Tomorrow With ‘Left 4 Dead 2′

Anyone ready to kill some zombies? At long last, Valve is finally bringing one of the last of their Source-engine games to the Mac with Left 4 Dead 2, which the Seattle-based game makers say will be released through Steam starting tomorrow, October 5th.

The Left 4 Dead series of games are co-operative based zombie survival shooters, and Left 4 Dead 2 is Valve’s most recent game and based upon the most advanced version of their Source engine. As usual, if you already own it on the PC, there’s no reason to re-download it: it’ll also be slurped down to your Mac.

Usually, when Valve releases a Mac version of one of their games, they accompany it with a savings deal, and it looks like Left 4 Dead 2 will be no exception: they are offering all four add-on missions (or DLC) for free along with every purchase of Left 4 Dead 2 for Mac. We might also see a price drop.

I’ve been looking forward to this for months. Who’s in for some zombie-killing tomorrow? Join us for some gaming on the official Cult of Mac Steam group.

As for Left 4 Dead 1? That’s still forthcoming: Valve says they had a couple last minute problems getting the Mac version up to snuff. How weird to see a sequel come out on the Mac before the original.

GDC Vault Debuts Invitation-Only Beta For Individual Subscribers

The GDC Vault, which holds hundreds of streaming video, audio and slides-based presentations to the multiple Game Developers Conference yearly events, has opened Beta invitations to individuals for a yearly subscription.

Though it was available to All-Access GDC Pass holders and to group subscribers over the past few months -- and entire studio and school subscriptions are still available, a limited-time Beta offer for individuals is now in place.

For a limited initial period only, the invite-only GDC Vault individual subscription Beta will offer a year's access to hundreds of specially recorded videos of the top Game Developers Conference talks, for less than the price of a GDC Main Conference pass.

The free section of GDC Vault showcases just a fraction of the content recorded by GDC organizers, with Vault subscription-only audio recordings currently stretching back to GDC 2004, and subscriber-exclusive synced video, audio and slides starting during GDC 2009.

With the majority of the content from Game Developers Conference 2009 and every GDC event in 2010 to be recorded in video form, a total of nearly 400 hours of GDC talks are already available to Vault subscribers, allowing those who missed out on specific programming, design, business, art, or audio talks to catch up in full.
