“Bloody Tears” mixed with Tupac’s...

“Bloody Tears” mixed with Tupac’s “Realist Killaz” by Rainyphase. This mix is from 2007, but I hadn’t heard it until OSV posted it last night. Not bad!

After listening to this, I realized that with a new Castlevania game out, there must be new versions of “Bloody Tears,” “Vampire Killer,” and other standards to listen to… and then I read this other OSV post, which reveals that none of the Castlevania standards appear.. As much as I don’t want to be the kind of person who dismisses a new game for not adhering to every aspect of its predecessors, I can’t deny feeling some disappointment. I mean, I was about to listen to that on YouTube, and now what am I going to do?

Dead Space 2 collector's edition with replica plasma cutter leaked

According to a (since removed) image found on Amazon and now posted on Examiner, the collector's edition of Dead Space 2 will include a life-size toy Plasma Cutter, in addition to a soundtrack CD, a DLC voucher, and a piece of artwork. EA announced its intention to produce a collector's edition for the sequel way back in January, when it sought ideas for pack-in items from fans. The plasma cutter happened to be on the list even then -- and we called it "outrageous."

Being a sort-of leaked item, EA hasn't officially announced its existence, and thus no information about its price is known.

GDC Online 2010: The Complete Coverage So Far

Gamasutra is in Austin, Texas all this week covering GDC Online, with a host of lectures on online games, iPhone/iPad and related product announcements already written up for the website - here's all the stories posted so far. [UPDATE: session, product stories updated on Thursday, October 7th.] The Austin, Texas based conference -- formerly known as GDC Austin -- is sharply focused on the development of online games, and there are now more than 120 ...

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow

Kojima-influenced vampire epic is well worth getting your teeth into.

Surprise package doesn't even begin to cover it. At the start of the year few would have pegged this 3D reset of Castlevania, Konami's long-in the-tooth (vampire joke intended) gothic adventure franchise, to be among the biggest and best PS3 games of the year - possibly of this generation.

Just try to follow this Vanquish trailer

It's hard to neatly sum up this latest Vanquish trailer. A lot of things happen, and very quickly. There's a transforming gun, lots of robot homicide (robocide?) and a ton of slow-motion explosions. Do you really need any more information than that?

GDC Vault Debuts Invitation-Only Beta For Individual Subscribers

The GDC Vault, which holds hundreds of streaming video, audio and slides-based presentations to the multiple Game Developers Conference yearly events, has opened Beta invitations to individuals for a yearly subscription.

Though it was available to All-Access GDC Pass holders and to group subscribers over the past few months -- and entire studio and school subscriptions are still available, a limited-time Beta offer for individuals is now in place.

For a limited initial period only, the invite-only GDC Vault individual subscription Beta will offer a year's access to hundreds of specially recorded videos of the top Game Developers Conference talks, for less than the price of a GDC Main Conference pass.

The free section of GDC Vault showcases just a fraction of the content recorded by GDC organizers, with Vault subscription-only audio recordings currently stretching back to GDC 2004, and subscriber-exclusive synced video, audio and slides starting during GDC 2009.

With the majority of the content from Game Developers Conference 2009 and every GDC event in 2010 to be recorded in video form, a total of nearly 400 hours of GDC talks are already available to Vault subscribers, allowing those who missed out on specific programming, design, business, art, or audio talks to catch up in full.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Even though the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West" has been relentlessly adapted back and forth across many books, TV shows, and video games, Ninja Theory's Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is an incredibly unique take on the iconic story. Supported by memorable characters, smart dialogue, impressive art design, and some downright gorgeous environments, Enslaved is a stellar action-adventure from the Heavenly Sword developer. Asylum's 10 Most Anticipated Holiday 2010 Video Games

Asylum.com writes: "Hopefully the following titles will give us an excuse to call out of work for a day (or three), but the "jaded gamer" part of us -- whose rose-tinted horn rims have been cracked one too many times following unmet sky-high expectations -- demands cautious optimism.

The following is a countdown of our most anticipated titles based on what we've played or seen over the past few months. We really hope none of them suck.

Let us know which title you're most excited about by voting in our reader poll."

Games That Adults Can Enjoy Too

"There are many games out there that people, who are not into gaming, will initially and falsely consider childish. Adults can enjoy these games just as much as the young do. Perhaps it just requires a leap of faith and a desire to recapture the fun of their youth. Dont let cartoon imagery put you off as some games that everyone can enjoy are thought to be embarrassing to like. Below I will try to give each game a fair trial and will try to show you that these games arent just for kids."

New Information For The Week

Halo Reach's Latest Weekly Challenge is Legendary Co-Op

If you're addicted to Bungie's credit system in Halo Reach, you've probably been paying close attention to the daily and weekly challenges they put out in the game.  These challenges provide a ton of bonus credits for those that complete them and to this point, Bungie has done a pretty good job of balancing these between all the game modes including single player, versus, and co-op.

The new weekly challenge just went live - and while the first week was single player focused and the second week was versus, the third week's challenge is all co-op.  For a sweet 2500 credits all you need to do is complete one mission of the game on Legendary with at least one co-op partner.   Remember - if you're looking for someone to play with, especially since we're still waiting on campaign matchmaking - you can hit up the Co-Optimus forums!

Tools that power Tiger Woods Online win prestigious Wall Street Journal award

The Wall Street Journal named game-tool developer Unity Technologies its 2010 Technology Innovation Award for software.

A 3D toolset for online development, Unity signed a multiyear deal with Electronic Arts on September 28 to use Unity for upcoming console, mobile, and Web titles. EA is already using Unity to power Tiger Woods Online, its free browser golf simulation. Unity is designed to work for all the major console and mobile platforms, though currently, developers are using it more for mobile and online games than console products.

This is the 10th year for the Wall Street Journal tech innovation awards. Unity Technologies is the only company in the video-game space to win an award this year.

New Information For Today

DeNA Invests In Office Heroes Developer Astro Ape

Japanese firm DeNA has invested an undisclosed amount in mobile social games developer Astro Ape Studios (Office Heroes) -- its fourth investment in a U.S. company in the past year. As part of this transaction, Astro Ape will create titles for DeNA's MiniNation mobile platform.

Based in Edison, New Jersey and founded in March 2009, Astro Ape primarily develops for iDevices. Its released titles so far include Office Heroes, a free game in which players climb the corporate ladder while customizing their office; and iGotBling, an app inviting users to wear their iPhone their belts or necklaces.

This backing follows three other investments DeNA's made recently in the U.S. -- the Tokyo-based company financed Burlingame-based OpenFeint developer Aurora Feint, acquired Bellevue-based mobile social network developer IceBreaker, and most recently bought Mountain View-based developer Gameview Studios.

DeNA purchased Gameview with plans to have the developer work with MiniNation, its smartphone-focused subsidiary and iPhone social network, too. The firm says these moves are part of its "X-device, X-border" strategy, which aims to " promote game development across different devices and national borders".

In Japan, the company runs mobile social gaming community Mobage-town, which has over 20 million subscribers. Last month, the firm reported a 175 percent increase in revenues to $279 million for the first quarter of 2010 (ending June), and it expects to generate $1 billion by the end of the fiscal year.

"Astro Ape represents yet another step in our X-border X-device strategy of bringing battery-draining, addictive social game experiences to consumers worldwide," says DeNA CEO Tomoko Namba.

Namba continues, "Today's investment is another step in our process of becoming a mainstream American gaming brand through proprietary content and empowering others to prosper on our gaming platform. Despite the number of current deals we've announced in the U.S., we're just getting started."

More LBP2 Beta Goodness

I can’t believe all the possibilities this game is offering. It’s going to be like getting 100 different games in one.

Even though they announce a delayed release until Jan. 18, 2011 for LBP2, they did promise that “On the upside, we are going to find a way to give more of you a taste of LBP2 prior to launch, so stay tuned.” Hopefully that means open beta so we can begin to enjoy levels such as these.

The Other Mmm…

The Other Mmm…

I originally had a narrative for this comic. It said, “After a long day of saving the galaxy… Samus Aran likes to lay back and relax with-” But while I was putting the comic together, I decided that it worked better with just the humming of the “personal massager.”

So, I haven’t got a chance to pick up Metroid: Other M yet. I’ve heard that a lot of people like it and I’ve also heard people complain that Samus talks too much and isn’t nearly butch enough for their likings. As I said, haven’t pick it up yet. So if you have played it and you have an opinion on the matter, please don’t hesitate to post it below. It’ll help me decide when and if I finally pick it up… But odds are it will still be when.

Dragon Age: Origins - Darkspawn Chronicles review

Rob Hamilton writes: "After playing through Darkspawn Chronicles, one of the many bits of DLC for Dragon Age: Origins, I was reminded of a classic science fiction story by the late Fredric Brown titled "The Arena". It concerns a battle between the forces of Earth and an alien civilization only known as the Outsiders. One member of each race are captured and taken to an arena by a mystical higher power because they are so evenly-matched that the result of an all-out war would be the utter destruction of one race, while the winner would be so crippled that they would never recover. The two captives are to battle to the death, with the loser's race being wiped out so the winner's can prosper."
