Gears Of War 3 Review

Gears with War 3 arrives five years after the primary sketched the rulebook for modern console shooters. In that time the military sci-fi series’ cover system, visual style and regenerating health get become standards in the third-person action game, even influencing additional genres for better and worse. It's the very definition of a popular console shooter and that's something which nobody could very well take away from it.

The long term didn't look best humanity any time we last played a new Gears of War title; the last human city had features fallen and a whole new alien threat had reared its main too, the ridiculously named Lambent. Gears of War 3 continues 18 months afterwards, with survivors scattered and civilisation in ruins - a predictable point to jump to, but therefore much better than if everyone just kissed and made high.

Gears with War 3 can't want to evoke the same type of wow phase that the best game did with release, though; the first game's crisp graphics and wily technical tricks designed it main titles to convince console gamers that a new HDTV was a legitimate expense. Still, Gears of War a few wears its blockbuster quality on its sleeve - the graphics are outstanding, and there's little to complain about, apart from the occasional jaggy shadow. Motion is slick, with a decent structure rate maintained throughout. What's more, in response to the main criticism in the series’ look, the surface textures will also be now varied, and pop-in is rare, helping to be able to create a more interesting game world than its predecessors.

HP EliteBook 8460w, 8560w, and 8760w mobile workstations all go on sale

If Dell's latest 17-inch powerhouse is too beastly for your next business trip, HP has begun selling its trio of new EliteBook mobile workstations, with screen sizes as small as 14 inches. In the case of both the 14-inch 8460w and the 15.6-inch 8560w, you get discrete graphics standard and can choose a $1,000 Core i7-2820QM processor, among less pricey options. (With the 15-inch iteration, you can also opt for a 1 billion-color DreamColor display.) Admittedly, you will have to step up to the 17-inch 8760w if you want a Core i7-2920XM CPU, AMD FirePro or NVIDIA Quadro graphics with up to 4GB of memory, and up to three hard drives with RAID 5 support. As promised, they're going for $1,299, $1,239, and $1,899, respectively -- in case your corporate card's just begging for its next hit.

[Thanks, Fuzzball]

White “iPhone 5″ Back Plate Shows a Relocated LED Flash

A Chinese developer posted an image of a white iPhone back plate on his Sina microblog (a Twitter-like China’s microblogging site) and surprisingly, it shows the relocated LED flash on the top-right side, just like the purported iPhone 5 case we have seen earlier. Is this real? Well, it could very well be a white "iPhone 5" back plate, or an extremely poor photoshop job. You guys decide. Bigger pic after the jump.

Will Honeycomb beat the Apple iPad?

Honeycomb (Android 3.0 or later) is optimized for tablets. Could it be the missing ingredient in providing a serious challenger to the Apple iPad?

I think everyone accepts that, so far at least, the iPad has ruled the tablet roost. There has been plenty of competition vying to take its crown, most of which has adopted the Android platform, but none have yet put up a significant challenge. This has been due to a number of different reasons.

First of all Apple got it right first time. Oh sure, there were things wrong with the original iPad, only some of which have been addressed with the iPad 2. But the look, feel, and essence of the device is bang on the money. The price point was also lower than many expected. On the other side Android hasn’t been optimized for tablets until Honeycomb, and rival manufacturers struggled to compete with, let alone beat, the pricing of the iPad.

However, the iPad is now out there, everyone knows about it, and the initial fever has died down. The people left in the market for a tablet are those that have rejected Apple’s offering for whatever reason. All they need now is the right product to buy, and at the right price.

Honeycomb by itself won’t see off the iPad, because it still needs the right hardware to compliment it. However, that will come in time, with one of the many manufacturers producing Android tablets surely able to deliver the goods in the near future. If they can do so while undercutting the iPad significantly then Apple may soon be facing a future where not everything is going its way.

I hate to say it but I have one eye firmly fixed on the rumored Amazon tablet now. It’s almost guaranteed to be running on Android, and all the Honeycomb bugs should by then be a thing of the past. And with a possible ad-supported option chipping away at the price this could be a real challenger.

Mobile: The Key to Education Anywhere

iPad in schoolIn 1985, when Bruce Springsteen wrote “We learned more from a three-minute record than we ever learned in school,” he was talking about the lure of whatever might be waiting outside every classroom around the world. That  youthful feeling of the world passing you by — the things you were missing as you sat in a classroom day after day — is an age-old challenge for educators. It’s one that’s about to be subjected to an even greater assault as the digital generation moves deeper into education.

The Internet was the first volley on the way a generation learned. Students no longer had to trudge to the library to research a topic. The encyclopedias of our parents’ generation were tossed into recycling bins, and a combination of Google and Wikipedia was all students needed to complete even the most ambitious assignments. Even with all their merit — the world’s opinions and research at your fingertips — educators shunned the tools in the class. They banned the Internet to the corner, equipping it with the dunce cap.

Mobile is the second volley in this assault on education, and the impact is going to be far larger and broader-reaching than the Internet and computers were before it. If the web brought research to the desktop, mobile brings all that power — plus context — to the hip pocket. We all have the ultimate ability to find, disseminate, discuss, opine, distribute and create on the fly, and this power is something educators will need to embrace — and quickly.

New mobile technologies such as augmented reality, Google Goggles and real-time language translation applications are helping smartphones become key tools in the real-time learning toolkit. And students are bringing this technology into the classroom.

This generation of students is far different from its predecessors when it comes to the consumption of technology. Students coming of age during the Internet revolution seemed to be much more engaged in the making of technology — building the foundation of bits and bytes — while students today are much more inclined to use the technology for other pursuits, including education. Using mobile technology to learn is as natural a move and non-disruptive for this generation as it was for their parents to bring encyclopedias out of the library and into the home.

The single, most powerful pull of mobile is the seamless connectivity it enables. There has never been a time in history where the earth has been flatter, where it was easier to have a social network that extended beyond a city or country or hemisphere, or that different cultures were as exposed in real time – and it’s all because of the smartphone. This power is global and comes to life through the 250 million mobile Facebook users, photo applications like Instagram and mobile video sharing services like Qik.

“The next wave of teaching, when you’re facing students who have computers in their hands or on their desks, really is about taking advantage of that connectivity,” says Sidneyeve Matrix, National Scholar and Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Film at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. “So that’s just another reason for educators to push for mobile learning opportunities or to challenge themselves to figure out to utilize the technology their students already have.”

With this power, there’s the growing potential to also increase the gap between the technology haves and the technology have-nots, as well as the growing concern that  “always connected” means never able to concentrate on the task at hand. The classroom is the perfect place to teach the potential of mobile learning and, at the same time, expose the technology to students who don’t have access to it. Teachers can start by bringing in games that leverage mobile. Quizzes and micro-learning opportunities abound during the school day; use mobile to capture them. Exposure can also come in the form of recording classes and turning them into podcasts, assigning teams to work on mobile video projects or even doing real-time scavenger hunts on campus or in the community.

This often leads to a profound argument that has been in our discourse since Google launched and became the Internet’s conduit to humanity’s collective brain: Are kids learning to learn or are they simply learning to find. It’s a subtle difference. Has information become temporary, or even disposable? Face it; we don’t go to school really to learn about things — natural curiosity will overcome learning lethargy to drive lifelong education — but we do go to learn to learn and that’s what will be impacted the most with mobile.

Learning is a skill. Teaching that skill happens every day in the classroom but it need not end there, and that’s where mobile can truly shine. Mobile holds the nascent promise of bridging the desire to learn about everything and the ability to learn about it anywhere. The key now is to start.

For almost 10 years Rob has been immersed in the middle of the mobile revolution in roles ranging from strategic advisor, board member and coach to VP Operations and President and CEO. Rob currently runs UNTETHER.tv where he interviews mobile luminaries about how they are building their businesses and he also strategizes with major brands on embracing mobile within their organizations.

This Robot Can Crack Any Master Lock

lockpickingrobot This Robot Can Crack Any Master Lock

What, you may ask, are these three hotties and that one guy doing holding what looks like a logic board? That would be the LockCracker, a robot designed to ensure no gym locker can stand in its way, and helping advance the arrival of our robot overlords just that little step closer.

Designed and built by Jessica Bethune, Aiswary Kolisetty, Jessica Noglows, and Rob Sobecki at The Olin College of Engineering, or Team JARJ as they call themselves, the LockCracker is pretty ingenious. Designed around Master Locks, the user inputs what they know of the combination into the computer, clicks the mouse, and the LockCracker takes care of the rest, physically running every possible combination if necessary to open the lock. As a nice bonus, it displays the combination to the user, so you don’t have to use the LockCracker twice.

It’s actually a pretty ingenious project, and believe it or not, it was done for class. They had to custom-engineer a mechanical system, design an electrical system around it, and code the software in C and Python.

No word on what the team will do next, or if the LockCracker has any future beyond a resume line, but we hope it enters production, if for no other reason than we’d really like to get our gym bag back. Check out their website for the project, and full details on how they built it, at the LockCracker official site.

Samsung HDD manages 1TB per platter, areal-density enthusiasts rejoice

Solid state drives are the geek storage of choice, what with their quiet nature, blazing fast speed, and stunning good looks. However, the limited capacity and sky-high price of SSDs keeps many of us buying traditional disk-based storage solutions -- which is just fine considering Samsung keeps finding ways to fit more bits and bytes on every drive. Last year, Sammy's EcoGreen F4EG squeezed 2TB onto a 3-platter drive (or 667GB per platter), and now the company's primed to release a new series of Spinpoint drives with even greater areal density at a time and price that remains TBD. Whenever they do get here, the new HDDs promise to deliver 1TB per platter spinning at 5,400RPM -- meaning 4TB desktop drives and a terabyte of storage in standard-sized laptop HDDs. The 3.5-inch version packs a 32MB cache and SATA 6Gbps compatibility, while the 2.5-inch variety has an 8MB cache and a 3 Gb/s SATA interface. Knowing all that, only one question remains: could areal-density enthusiasts be the new pixel-density enthusiasts?

These are just two of the latest 12.5 inch notebooks from Lenovo. The company seems to have decided that notebooks with 12.5 inch displays hit the sweet spot between netbooks and full sized computers, offering portability but room for full-sized keyboards and high resolution displays. The recently launched Lenovo IdeaPad U260 and ThinkPad E220s both have 12.5 inch screens.

The new ThinkPad X220 computers will be available with Core i3, Core i5, or Core i7 processors, which Lenovo says makes the X220 much more powerful than a typical low power ultraportable. But the company is also emphasizing the X220′s long battery life.

Lenovo says the ThinkPad X220 laptop will ship standard with a 6 cell battery that provides up to 9 hours of run time. Upgrade to a 9 cell battery and you should get 15 hours. There’s also an external battery option which provides up to 24 hours of run time.

The ThinkPad X220 laptop comes with 802.11n WiFi and optional WiMAX and 3G modems. Hard drive and SSD options are available.

The laptop weighs about 3 pounds and should be available in April for $899 and up.

Avoid Tech With the Aid of an App

Sabbath Manifesto
Despite being tech bloggers, we're all about unplugging for a while, and setting aside time to be tech-free. Reboot, a Jewish non-profit organization, also wants you to find time to unplug, specifically in honor of the sabbath. The group has created both a mobile app and Web app called 'Sabbath Manifesto,' which helps to remind you to disconnect, and allows you to tell others about your plans to go offline. Though Reboot has its roots in Jewish tradition, the group wants people of all beliefs to join in the second annual National Day of Unplugging, which begins at sundown on March 4th. During the following 25 hours, Reboot encourages users to observe 10 principles, the first and most obvious being "Avoid technology." But the list goes further, encouraging participants to "connect with loved ones," "get outside" and "give back."

Reboot is aware of the strangeness of using an app to help you disconnect. A spokesperson told the New York Times, "[We] fully get the irony of using a high-tech app to announce a low-tech day. But really, what better way to tell your followers that you won't be tweeting on the weekend." Besides having the ability to get reminders and share your intention to unplug through various social networks, you can also use 'Sabbath Manifesto' to draft, well, a manifesto, explaining why you'll be shunning the Web for 24 hours. The app is available for Android and BlackBerry currently, and an iPhone version is awaiting approval from Apple.

Fine, One Last Piece Of Zelda Propaganda

zelda-swords-cut.jpg

Note: Larger version HERE but you can go to Brian's DeviantART page for a massive 7500x5000px (18MB) version.

Here's one last piece (promise) of Zelda propaganda to finish off the celebratory week. It's a chart depicting the various swords from the different Zelda games as created by Geekologie Reader Brian R. (aka Spongeboy1985). Per the man himself (no not God, stupid):

This is A graphic I decided to make of the Swords of Legend of Zelda

This is my No means meant to be a complete Guide

I had a difficult Time Deciding how The Swords should be Categorized
Again thanks to Zelda Wiki For helping me decide

I decided to Not Include The Minish Cap White sword because it is a completely different sword than the others and is a Predecessor to The Four Sword

I included Swords In which I could find Images for
If you feel I'm Leaving something out or Know of images for Swords that I didn't include please let me know. I'm always looking to improve.

Almost Decided to but Minor Enemy swords Such as Darknut's sword and and Moblin spear but Decided not to.

Combined Noble Sword from Oracle Games With The White sword Because the Japanese Version Names it The White Sword Plus I could not Find any good Images of the Noble Sword

I created my own Version of the "Link's Awakening" logo Because the original looks like The "Link to the Past" Logo

Sure, so it's not 100% inclusive. But did that stop me from making it my wallpaper? It did not. But my penis? Out of the question. This is a 15" laptop, not a iPhone video wall!

AppleCare Gives Up As MacBook Air Video Problems Persist

I’ve had my 13-inch MacBook Air since they were first released and although I encountered video problems initially after the plethora of updates that Apple has released the video problems haven’t returned.

The updates included an EFI firmware update, a specific software update for the MacBook Air 2010 model, and the Mac OS X 10.6.5 software update. I even offered not one, but two suggested solutions to try.

These updates and suggested fixes worked for some, but unfortunately they didn’t work for everyone. People are still complaining on Apple Discussion Forums about problems they are encountering when connecting their MacBook Airs to external displays.

I’ll be up front and say that I seldom connect my MacBook Air to an external display. If I did that it would be like tethering an anchor to a feather. So why bother? I mean really it’s so tiny and the internal display is better than the new 13-inch MacBook Pro from what I’ve heard.

I simply don’t use an external display on my MacBook Air. However, in the interest of experimentation I have been using one recently, an old Dell wide screen monitor, via a Mini-Display Port to VGA adapter . So far so good. I haven’t noticed any problems on the internal or external display. I plan on obtaining a DVI adapter to see how that works out.

Although my luck continues for many others their luck has run out. The discussion thread is approaching ten pages long and several recent posts showed me that the problem does indeed persist and Apple isn’t or cannot do anything about it yet.

One user, lbaum, reported that he had “gone through 2 months working on that issue… several calls with AppleCare, software diagnostics tests, trying different monitors and cables, and lately: even a logic board replacement. ” Eventually he said, “AppleCare gave up…” sending him to to another service center for a logic board replacement. His MacBook Air was tested on various displays and the problem manifested itself again, but his 17″ MacBook Pro worked just fine on the same displays. Finally he came to this conclusion:

…it appears to be a general problem with all new Macbook Airs that the external video signal is pretty bad. Some monitors seem to be more “forgiving” and don’t show any problems (in my tests, Samsung, Apple, and NEC worked pretty okay). If you have one of those, lucky you!

Other monitors (in my tests particularly Eizo and Fujitsu) seem to be less forgiving and show intensive flickering. If you have one of those, bad luck! (Unfortunately, at my workplace we only have Eizos). A replacement Macbook Air will most likely not solve the issue for you!

Another user, schallau ends his post with:

I called AppleCare and got transferred to an L2 and they advised me to take it to a genius bar. The guy at the genius bar confirmed with with my MBA and ONE TAKEN FROM THE FLOOR!! He said that we could send it in, but that replacing the logic board wouldn’t likely fix the issue. So, my question is: WHAT NOW? No resolution isn’t acceptable.

I completely agree — no resolution isn’t acceptable and it’s not like Apple wouldn’t offer one. I’m sure they would go as far as to offer a refund or even another computer to replace a defective MacBook Air. Frankly, I’d rather see the problem resolved because I like my MacBook Air a whole lot and I’m not interested in giving it up for one of those boat anchors…I mean…MacBook Pros that Apple sells.

So what do you say Apple? Are you going to fix our MacBook Airs or what? I intend on pressing the issue with Apple this week until I get an answer. In the meantime let us know if you are still experiencing this problem by leaving a comment.

Blackberry Rep: PlayBook Will Support Android Apps [Video]

This image has no alt text

We’re not exactly huge Blackberry fans here at Phandroid, obviously, but we do cover any and everything Android. Having said that, a new video has come out of a RIM  representative confirming that the Blackberry Playbook tablet will – at some point – support Android applications.

We’ve heard those murmurs a while ago, and recent testimonials from the folks who develop Shop Savvy have all but confirmed this to be true. RIM has yet to make any official announcement mentioning this, but this is as good as it’s going to get. We’re not saying we’re going to go out and snatch up a Playbook because of it, but it’s still good news. It’s at the 14 second mark in the video above. [via CrackBerry]

The holiday season has always been a time for gathering -- but in recent years, it's also been a time when family and friends come bearing gifts of computer troubles. Their computer friends -- people like the Download Squad team and you, our readers -- get asked to do everything from installing RAM upgrades to the annual computer tune-up. We're happy to oblige, of course, because there's a decent chance someone will pay us in beer or baked goods. Cash is welcome too, but never seems to be offered quite as readily.

To make your holiday tech duties a bit easier, I've put together a list of some of my favorite troubleshooting apps for Windows.

Where download links for the files aren't on the application's main page, I've included a link to the appropriate download page. I've provided a handful of FileHippo links as well -- they're an excellent mirror site and they don't surround download links in advertisements or "recommendations."

Gauss Weapons - Cannon and Rifle

Gauss Weapons are lots of fun because there is some cool science making them work. At first glance it doesn’t look like anything special would happen with the typical Gauss Gun setup. As each magnet/ball bearing chain is reached the energy and speed increases. The effect is stunning because there is no explosives or electrical energy being used, just some normal magnets and the Gauss Gun setup is all you need. The ideal material to make your Gauss Cannon from would be a material that does not induce friction which would prevent the gun from attaining maximum speed.

Article: iPad Gems: Dot 2 Dot Cosmic, Pirates vs. Ninjas vs. Zombies vs. Pandas + Ridge Racer Accelerated HD

Welcome to this week’s edition of iPad Gems! Our latest roundup of games is focused primarily on titles for Apple’s tablet, though each of the titles either includes iPhone/iPod touch support or sells alongside a similar standalone app for that purpose—the former is obviously strongly preferred. Our top pick of the bunch is Pirates vs. Ninjas vs. Zombies vs. Pandas, an amusingly named rival to Rovio’s Angry Birds. We’ve…
