Banana Peels & Green Shells: Mario Kart IRL

mario-kart-irl.jpg

This is the follow up to Remi Gaillard's first real-life Mario Kart video from 2008. Wow, has it really been that long? It seems like only yesterday I was stuffing my pockets with airplane bottles for a trip to the doctor (it was yesterday is the thing). Damn yeah I like to bring my own anesthesia! Just kidding, it's because Blue Cross took away my health insurance. You pee blood out your navel one time...

In an on-stage announcement at Mobile World Congress, Foursquare founder and CEO Denis Crowley said the location-based startup had added five new languages to its mobile application.

These are: Spanish, French, German, Italian and Japanese. He said the new app (2.2.5) will be available on versions for the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android today.

The analytics platform for merchants and venue owners remains oriented towards the US, but Crowley said they were looking at further internationalisation. He added that they would be focusing on the API this year.

Apple To Take On Android With No-Contract ‘iPhone Nano’

Apple Logo Apple To Take On Android With No Contract iPhone Nano

It’s no secret that Apple has but one phone while its rival Google has a whole, giant family of Android handsets. And it’s going to get more difficult to compete with all those levels of Android devices if Apple doesn’t branch out a bit.

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is already on it. Of course, the Verizon iPhone (which launched today!!) is one such step, but Apple is also working on a smaller, less expensive iPhone to help diversify its iPhone customer base. That phone would be about a third smaller than the current iPhone and would use parts from the iPhone 4, rather than more advanced, expensive components from the upcoming iPhone 5, which it could be launched alongside.

According to the report, Apple is considering offering this new iPhone ‘Nano’ for $200 without a contract, which would let customers pick and switch between cell phone providers. While Google famously dabbled in the no-contract waters with the Nexus One, it charged a high premium for the untied handset. So a $200, no-contract phone would be huge.

Making it even huger, Apple is also reportedly developing a dual-mode phone that could switch between networks. Imagine if that phone were sold without contract: it would be an iPhone that could work on major U.S. network without being tied to a single one. That could certainly change everything.

Of course, since we’re working in unconfirmed rumors right now, that’s all we really can do: imagine. [via Bloomberg]

Over 1,000 Nokia Employees Walk Out in Protest of WP7 Switch

Nokia Employees Walk Out
Looks like some Nokia employees -- specifically those that work specifically on the now-dead Symbian platform -- are not particularly happy about the switch to Windows Phone 7. Over 1,000 employees at the company's Tampere and Oulu offices in Finland decided to use their flextime to leave work early today in protest of the move. Maybe they'll use the time to bone up on their Windows Phone developer skills.

Motorola Xoom coming to Best Buy on February 24th, HTC Thunderbolt on the 14th

We're already fatigued of reporting launch dates for devices announced at this year's CES -- it seems like each one has had at least four different potential release points -- but when you get one of Best Buy's official Facebook pages blabbing about when the Moto Xoom and HTC Thunderbolt will be arriving... well, you sum up the strength to do it one more time. Contrary to earlier insider leaks pinning the Xoom to a February 17th launch, Best Buy is now promising to have the vanguard of the Honeycomb tablet revolution on February 24th. That's exactly a week later than our earlier info, so perhaps somebody somewhere decided to push things back a bit. We have no doubt, however, that Motorola is nearly ready with its slate -- there have been plenty of them spotted around the Super Bowl this week. In the meantime, HTC's LTE-equipped 4.3-incher seems to have finally settled down on Valentine's Day as its time of reckoning, a day after the similarly sized Inspire 4G hits AT&T.

Verizon iPhone: Slower Data, Better Coverage

Verizon iPhone 4 The long wait for the iPhone on Verizon's network is almost over, as consumers will finally be able to get their greedy mitts on the CDMA-enabled iPhone 4 on February 10th. But reviewers have already put the phone through its paces -- and they're saying just what you'd expect: that It's the same exact device as the iPhone 4 on AT&T, but on a much better network. Reviewer after reviewer found that the iPhone 4 on Verizon was much more reliable when it came to reception and dropped calls. But, while coverage was vastly improved, there are trade-offs. Most side-by-side tests put the Verizon iPhone's data connection about 50-percent slower on downloads and 60-percent slower on uploads than the AT&T version. Of course, to take advantage of those improved speeds you'll have to get and stay connected. Those speed differences were quite noticeable under some circumstances, such as Wired's Netflix test, during which the Verizon iPhone's streams were significantly more pixelated.

While you can't browse the Web and hold a conversation at the same time on the Verizon iPhone (thanks to the limitations of CDMA technology), there is one major advantage to picking Verizon: unlimited data. Verizon plans to eventually stop offering unlimited data, but $30 currently gets you all the bytes you can download, an option phased out by AT&T early in 2010. The general theme of every review we read can be summed up quite nicely by a quote from our friends at Engadget: "Apple and Verizon did the impossible: they made the best smartphone in America just a little bit better."

2010 3-D Movies Supercut, SMS Popup Brings Quicky Text Reply to Android

Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

Read:
Still cheating on video games But in fact the Newsweek analysis just repeats the conventional wisdom it claims to overturn and makes the same old invalid comparison that entertainment-business journalism has been making since video games started making real money. A cursory glance at the pie charts makes it seem as if the gaming industry is not all that far behind films: the games total is $60.6 billion vs. $77.1 billion for movies. But let's take a glance that isn't cursory. My Jerry Saltz Problem In exchange for the brief rush of recognition that you might feel sitting across from Abramovic or posting to Saltz's Facebook page, you grant them much more than their fifteen minutes. You end up ultimately diminished-another brick in a 250,000-word wall-while adding to their cumulative luster. You "need to partake of the blood of others to grow," Saltz writes. And he should know.

Samsung wants to compete against the iPod touch

Until now, all the phone manufacturers were concentrating their energy on creating an iPhone or and iPad killer, with more or less success.
Samsung Apparently decided to try attack the iPod touch also, by making a version of the Galaxy missing the 3G connectivity. Here is a picture:

this device will aim at the very same market and will be both an mp3 player and a platform for Android applications. Not surprisingly, it will be available with 8, 16 and 32 GB of memory, two cameras, one of 3.2 MP in the back and one in the front with a VGA resolution. It will probably be unveiled next week at the CES in Las Vegas.

How to Get Your Verizon Refund

man holding cashOkay, so Verizon's agreed to pay $90 million to customers who have incurred erroneous data charges over the past three years. But, what can affected users do to make sure they actually receive their cash? In theory, nothing. The company says that it's currently going through its database to find users who should receive refunds, which will apparently appear in the form of credits on their forthcoming monthly phone bills. Former customers, meanwhile, will receive a refund check in the mail.

Some, however, may not be very willing to trust the accounting practices of a company that reportedly overlooked $90 million in frivolous data charges. At this point, Verizon has only stated that it will "provide more guidance" to customers who feel they were slighted, but said "guidance" could be nothing more than another customer service number.

Zombie-Killing Fun Coming To Mac Tomorrow With ‘Left 4 Dead 2′

Anyone ready to kill some zombies? At long last, Valve is finally bringing one of the last of their Source-engine games to the Mac with Left 4 Dead 2, which the Seattle-based game makers say will be released through Steam starting tomorrow, October 5th.

The Left 4 Dead series of games are co-operative based zombie survival shooters, and Left 4 Dead 2 is Valve’s most recent game and based upon the most advanced version of their Source engine. As usual, if you already own it on the PC, there’s no reason to re-download it: it’ll also be slurped down to your Mac.

Usually, when Valve releases a Mac version of one of their games, they accompany it with a savings deal, and it looks like Left 4 Dead 2 will be no exception: they are offering all four add-on missions (or DLC) for free along with every purchase of Left 4 Dead 2 for Mac. We might also see a price drop.

I’ve been looking forward to this for months. Who’s in for some zombie-killing tomorrow? Join us for some gaming on the official Cult of Mac Steam group.

As for Left 4 Dead 1? That’s still forthcoming: Valve says they had a couple last minute problems getting the Mac version up to snuff. How weird to see a sequel come out on the Mac before the original.
