Doritos: Crash Course

Money no obstacle.

Let's be honest, 'free' quite often equates to 'a bit rubbish'. It's certainly true of the previous Doritos game, Dash of Destruction, which was only worth downloading because it wouldn't actively harm you. And the less said about the Toyota Yaris game that appeared on XBLA in 2007 the better. You'd be forgiven, then, for wondering if Doritos: Crash Course is worth the extra wear on your thumb you'll endure by hitting the A button to download it.

Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll launch trailer looks great, sounds humiliating

There's some surprisingly beautiful imagery in this trailer for next week's Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll. And some silly names, though we shouldn't be too surprised in a game called "Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll." Watch it after the break, with the sound off so you don't hear the words "Chancellor Zofor."

Buoyed By Last Quarter Of iPhone Exclusivity, AT&T Is Now Biggest American Wireless Carrier

Verizon may have just landed the iPhone just in time: AT&T just announced that they have passed Verizon as the number on wireless carrier in America, increasing their current subscriber numbers to 95.5 million.

In Q1 2011, 2.8 million new wireless customers joined the network, and data revenue climbed by 27.4 percent compared to the same period a year ago to reach $4.9 billion.

Needless to say, AT&T’s last gasp with iPhone exclusivity had something to do with that: in fact, 4.1 million iPhones were activated in that three month period.

What’s more surprising, though, is just how insignificant the iPad’s contributions to AT&T’s fortunes were. In fact, for the entire quarter, AT&T only racked up 442,000 tablet activations… compared to 7.33 million iPads sold by Apple during last quarter.

Granted, Apple sells iPads internationally, but the 442,000 number takes into account AT&T’s other tablet activations, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Looking at these numbers, it looks like the iPad contributed comparatively little to AT&T’s success this quarter… and, in fact, that the iPad 3G might be significantly less popular than the WiFi-only variety.

Apple Awards $10K to Lucky Winner, Lucky Winner Hangs Up on the Call

gail davisOn Saturday, iTunes VP Eddy Cue called a woman named Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, U.K., to congratulate her on winning Apple's 10 billionth app download sweepstakes, and to award her with a $10,000 prize. Davis, however, politely declined the offer, and hung up.

"I thought it was a prank call," Davis told Cult of Mac. "I said, 'Thank you very much, I'm not interested' and I hung up." But one of her daughters knew that the call definitely wasn't a hoax because she was the one who downloaded the free Paper Glider app -- the lucky 10 billionth app download.

New week, new PSP2 rumors

Though Sony is expected to formally announce and unveil the PSP successor, the PlayStation Portable 2 in a press event to be held later this week, it seems that major Japanese newspaper Nikkei has gotten ahold of some juicy bits of information early, and wasn’t shy about letting their details fly.

According to Nikkei, the new portable will will feature several features that should be pretty exciting for technology fans and gaming fans alike.

Reportedly, the PSP2 will be able to link up to the NTT DoCoMo network in Japan via a 3G phone connection. While this is clearly not to apply to Western customers, the noteworthy aspect here is that the device apparently has 3G capability – when the handheld launches in the West we’ll be keeping an eye out for potential carrier deals. Perhaps something to tie into the PlayStation Phone?

The other major bit of tech that Nikkei is reporting, is that the PSP2 allegedly features a OLED screen, which, if true, will mean the PSP2 will be home to some outstanding visual fidelity. Not only this, but the screen is expected to be a touchscreen as well.

Earlier reports noted that the PSP2 would have some kind of touch panel on the back of the device, it’s not yet known whether this reported touchscreen is meant to replace or complement the touchpad.

Nikkei also notes that the PSP2 will be utilizing an all-new processor that was designed specifically for the handheld device.

We don’t have any way of confirming this information yet, as Sony is remaining characteristically mum, but rest assured that we will bring you all the details when they’re available. With Sony’s big revelation due on January 27th, you won’t have long to wait!

Two Worlds II for the PS3 Winner

In total we had 144 entries. Here is the video of me randomly picking the winner, kane112!! Congratulations!! PM me your address and we’ll get it to you right away.

Special thanks to Aubrey Norris of SouthPeak games for making this happen.

Also, stay tuned for another givaway coming real soon! Real soon as in starting Tuesday!!

Two Worlds II will be available in stores Tuesday, January 25th. Hit the jump for details on this amazing looking game.

Game Details

“Two Worlds II” offers a perfect RP symbiosis of sheer atmosphere and dazzling technology. A complex quest system with an exciting main story that leads you through the world of Antaloor, plus lots of secondary scenarios with their associated quest stories ensure that the followers of the main story AND the adventurous souls who love the danger of exploring unknown regions will ALL get their money’s worth ! The many quests and video sequences, drenched in sheer atmosphere, drive the story mercilessly onwards. The sequences include ingame and render videos, all seamlessly integrated into the actual gameplay.

Completely redesigned AI and Balancing standards, experienced authors, the flexible combat system and the fabulously intuitive management of magic are further guarantees of game enjoyment, for RPG professionals and newcomers to the genre. The realistic behavior of the NPCs and other opponents in the game world is the key to sophisticated way-finding parameters, an ingenious communications network between NPCs and a continuous comparison of game data. The player has many ways of getting to wherever he wants to go, like walking, running, sprinting, riding, swimming, sailing and teleporting.

As far as combat is concerned, there’s a clever and artistic system of attack and defense moves available – all realistically integrated into the game by means of Motion Sensing. Active parrying, variable attack tactics with different hit results, and the reaction of the opponent to the selected strategy all ensure that every combat scenario becomes an unforgettable, individual experience. And the comprehensive magic system is also unbelievably flexible, thanks to the DEMONSTM technology. Players can use a complex card system to create almost as many spells as they want from the five mana sources of Air, Water, Earth, Fire and Dark Magic. An imposing particle system also ensures that the magic effects are implemented in spectacular fashion. And the same applies to Alchemy – thanks to the PAPAKTM method, players can brew unique potions for their experiments, using a huge spectrum of substances ranging from plants to minerals and animal ingredients.

Flexibility is also the key word in the design possibilities for weapons and armament items during gameplay. The technical foundation behind this feature is the newly created CRAFTTM tool. Thanks to this system, the player can break down almost any item into its basic materials like steel, wood and leather. These materials can then be used in turn to upgrade other items. Artistic-minded players can even buy paints and design their own individual armor and weapons. Then there are magical runes and artifacts which can be incorporated into weapons and items of armor. The combination of these three basic types of customization will give players an almost endless range of possibilities for creating their own equipment designs!

Then we have the GRACE engine, especially developed for “Two Worlds II”. In combination with the extremely flexible MoSens Cap system, it enables an almost unimaginable freedom of movement when the hero is walking, running, fighting and interacting with his environment. “Two Worlds II” is graphically superb, thanks to the powerful engine, which is packed full of technological highlights like an unlimited number of dynamic light sources, 24 bit HDR post-processing and Real Eye Adaptation. It will drastically reduce loading times, improve general game performance, and enable full gameplay with only moderate hardware requirements.

FEATURES

-A flexible combat system with variable attack moves, parrying and special tricks

-State-of-the-art technology, thanks to a powerful GRACETM engine and special tools

-Lots of mini-games for breaking up gameplay

-Intuitive user interface for the DEMONSTM Magic system and the PAPAKTM Alchemy system

PSP2, What We Think We Know (Several Updates)

***Not an official image. This is 1Up’s artist rendering based on developers descriptions***

The industry is bursting at the seams with information about the PSP2. One thing I’m sure we have all heard is it’s as powerful as the PS3. While I’m sure that’s an exaggeration, we can bet our bottom dollar on a powerful handheld system.

Recently 1Up has offered us even more information that they suggest is trustworthy.

It was stated by 1UP that it is roughly half as powerful as the PS3 itself combined with a screen that a developer described as “like the iPhone 4′s retina display but better.”

1UP went on to say, “We can confirm the rumored Uncharted spin-off game is real and in development as a showpiece game along these lines.”

Through developer sources, 1Up has made some other claims:

-back touch pad so that your finger does not block the screen

-front and back cameras

-tilt controls similar to the SIXAXIS

-dual analog sticks

-brick format like the original PSP’s and NOT like the PSP Go

-No UMD’s but instead will be using flash cart ROM’s

-friends list

Update 1:

Kotaku has insiders that claim the PSP2 has 1 gig of RAM. Twice that of the PS3

Update 2:

In a Eurogamer Interview, Danny Bilson from THQ gave a partial confirmation of the PSP2 by saying “I can’t really comment on hardware that is going to be released soon.”

Update 3:

Nikkei Newspaper says 3G and a multitouch OLED screen (Note) Nikkei is very very credible…I would almost go as far as to almost say this update is confirmed.

Update 4:

Engadget says Nikkei mentioned larger screen then the PSP and powered by a new potent silicon.

When we first told you guys about Rocket Bunnies for Android, the comments piled up claiming the game was indeed a blast, some even comparing its addiction to compareable to Angry Birds. Good news: we just got a note from our friends at Defiant Development letting us know about a HUGE update to the game that will have enthusiasts happy and newbs with a boat load more to dive into.

What new goodies can you expect?

Hidden hats

Take a look at the newness in action – the company sent us this exclusive screenshot that comes straight from the new version of the game:

I was also pleasantly surprised to find them commending the community for helping them improve the app. This is the type of attention to detail that makes great developers- not only making a great product but continually improving it for the people that matter most. A snippet directly from the horse’s mouth:

A massive shout out to the Android community for helping us catch bugs and add features. Your comments and feedback have helped us make this the best Rocket Bunnies yet. Here’s some things the community has helped with :

- Reduction of size on SD-Card was fixed as a priority.

- No crash on screen lock.

- Addition of a little bit of narrative set-up - check out the revised 1st level in the Carrot Galaxy to see what we’ve added!

- Lots of subtle improvements to the shell and navigation in order to make the interface clearer.

Developer Reflections 2011: Twisted Pixel On Comic Jumper

twisted1.jpg

[Development teams can be tens of people strong, or sometimes they can be just one guy barely out of school. There's still so much to learn about development, so we contacted developers across the gaming landscape to ask them what they enjoyed about the last year, what was the most troubling, and what lessons they'll be bringing into 2011]

Twisted Pixel has been a big part of the Xbox Live Arcade with The Maw and 'Splosion Man doing big sales. 2010 was all about Comic Jumper, their most unique and challenging game yet. We spoke to Michael Wilford about what he's learned in 2010, and what he intends to work on in the future.

What were you most happy with during the development of your games?

We released Comic Jumper in 2010, and we tried something new that we hadn't really done before, which was to bring in writers and professional voice actors to tell a bigger story and hopefully add some spoken comedy. Going into it, we were worried about how it would all come together, but without a doubt I have to say that it's what I am most happy with. The writers Matt Entin and Ed Kuehnel were fantastic, and the actors went above and beyond to make a downloadable title sound better than a lot of big budget triple-A retail projects. I'm super proud of the game and still laugh when I play it.

What were you least happy with, in retrospect?

With all the audio and writing and the four distinct comic book art styles, we always knew Comic Jumper was going to be a big game, but it ended up being even bigger than we anticipated, so the project took longer to finish than we had hoped. Also, we set out to make the game play like Gunstar Heroes, but we could have done a better job at making it more accessible to players that don't know what Gunstar Heroes is and how it's different from a lot of shooters today.

What is the biggest lesson you're going to apply to the next game you make?

I want to find a way to make our games something that people can keep coming back to in order to find something new.

[You can pick up The Maw and 'Splosion Man for 800MSP each, and Comic Jumper for 1200MSP]

PlayStation Phone Makes A Big Appearance on Chinese Website

pspphone PlayStation Phone Makes A Big Appearance on Chinese Website

The Sony PlayStation Phone was starting to remind me of the Garmin Nuviphone–awesome when you first hear about it, but so slow to materialize that you really don’t really care that much anymore.

Well, my interest is stoked again. The PSPhone has made a few appearances recently, the biggest of which was on Chinese site  IT168. The site had a rather in-depth breakdown of the phone that provides a look at what it’s all about.

The game-phone will be powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8255 and Qualcomm Adreno 205 GPU. It’ll get a 4-inch touchscreen with 854 x 480 res and a 5 MP camera. Other hardware includes 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, a microSD slot, SIM slot, micro-USB, and a second noise-canceling mic.

Sony hasn’t officially announced the PlayStation Phone, so still no word on when it exactly will drop. Hopefully, before we get bored waiting again. [via Engadget]

Samsung Gets Smallish with the Galaxy Mini – Debuting at MWC 2011

This image has no alt text

Samsung seems to have a lot up their sleeves for Mobile World Congress coming up this February. Superphones and dual-core behemoths aside, they’ve got a little bit for every sect of the smartphone market. The Samsung Galaxy Mini – otherwise known as the S5570 – runs Android 2.2.1, has a 320×240 resolution display (size not yet known), TouchWiz, Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi N, a camera (resolution and features unknown, but no flash), and has a microSD card slot. Not too bad, if the price is right. [via Samsung Hub]

iHandy Level App Review–Surprisingly Valuable For The Woodworker

An interesting new app to talk to you about today, folks, as I plunge back into the depths of iTunes (which, by now, you’ve probably come to expect of me on Thursdays) to check out what’s going on in there. And what I’ve got for you is one for the mechanically inclined among you, the iHandy Level.

The iHandy Level is, basically, an app for construction, giving you a level in your iPhone (or iPad or iPod Touch). You’ll get the option to hold the bubble and release it, as well as adjust the sensitivity of the bubble so you can

track things a little slower. If you’re up for spending a little cash, dropping two bucks on the app will get you access to a protractor, ruler, plumb line, and surface level.

Even at the free level, the level actually works really well, showing you precisely whether whatever you’re setting your Apple gear of choice down on is level or not (turns out the table at my favorite coffee shop is canted at about a two degree angle). Expanding outward gives you plenty of other carpenter’s tools, and they work about as well as the level does.

Sure, the whole thing is really niche, but for carpenters, this would likely be a truly great thing. Use your iPod for music, and then turn around and use it for a level or protractor. It just adds to the versatility of the whole thing, and there’s nothing I like so well as getting a variety of uses out of any one particular item. Versatility is just the best thing you can get out of a device, and this is the kind of thing that improves the versatility.

You may not get a whole lot of value out of this, but if you’re any kind of woodworker, you’ll definitely want this on hand.

The Good

Works well

Offers terrific versatility for woodworkers

The Bad

Incredibly limited

Score 7 / 10

Motorola Atrix 4G on Video: a Graphical Powerhouse

Among the many new handsets debuting at last week’s CES, the Motorola Atrix 4G commanded much of the attention. The smartphone uses a high-resolution 960 x 540 display powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 2 and will run on AT&T’s HSPA+ network in the first half of this year. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Atrix 4G is the ability to dock the phone in a laptop shell or a computer-like dock with USB ports, HDMI out and a wireless keyboard / mouse combo.

The modular docking options show promise, but I’m not yet sold that mainstream consumers will take to them. However, they’ll likely want to use the Atrix 4G as a miniature set-top box for big screen video or for rich 3-D gaming, so I captured those uses in an under four minute video. Tegra 2, which was inside most of the new phones and tablets, is surely up to the task for graphic intensive applications. At the end of the video, you’ll see how it handles a gallery full of images which fly across the screen without a hint of lag.

Verizon Launches iPhone 4, Available February 10th

Today marks the end of a very, very, very long march towards the Verizon iPhone. Years of fruitless rumors can now be put to rest as the iPhone 4 will soon be available in a CDMA flavor on Big Red's 3G network "early next month." At New York's Lincoln Center, Verizon announced that it began negotiating with Apple to bring the device to the network back in 2008, and that it has been internally testing Apple's iPhone 4 internally for roughly the last year on its nationwide network. Verizon customers will have a choice of iOS, Android or BlackBerry when shopping for a smartphone. It also means that iPhone fans no longer need to sign a contract for AT&T service, which has been the frequent target of reliability complaints since the launch of the original iPhone back in 2007.

The version being offered by Verizon is essentially the same device being offered on AT&T, including the speedy A4 processor, HD video capabilities, Facetime support and Apple's high-resolution retina display. The 16GB model will sell for $199.99 with a two-year agreement (the same deal offered by AT&T) starting on February 10, while the 32GB version will run $299.99. Though, due to limitation of CDMA tech, you won't be able to simultaneously talk on the phone and browse the Web as you can with the AT&T iPhone the Verizon version does have the ability to turn into a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five other devices, something Android users have enjoyed for sometime now that has been missing on iOS. The question now is, how will AT&T respond to losing its exclusive hold over the iPhone and how will Verizon's network hold up if, as expected, millions of customers flee AT&T and snatch up the Verizon iPhone?

Update: Engadget reports that, thanks to the slightly repositioned volume buttons and mute switch, current iPhone 4 cases and bumpers might not fit the Verizon version. The switch to CDMA necessitated a redesigned antenna, which resulted in the minor shift in placement. So, if you were considering jumping ship to Verizon and just reusing your old iPhone case, you might be forced to throw down for yet another overpriced case.
