The holiday season has always been a time for gathering -- but in recent years, it's also been a time when family and friends come bearing gifts of computer troubles. Their computer friends -- people like the Download Squad team and you, our readers -- get asked to do everything from installing RAM upgrades to the annual computer tune-up. We're happy to oblige, of course, because there's a decent chance someone will pay us in beer or baked goods. Cash is welcome too, but never seems to be offered quite as readily.
To make your holiday tech duties a bit easier, I've put together a list of some of my favorite troubleshooting apps for Windows.
Where download links for the files aren't on the application's main page, I've included a link to the appropriate download page. I've provided a handful of FileHippo links as well -- they're an excellent mirror site and they don't surround download links in advertisements or "recommendations."

555 Timer Contest
Once you are finished entering the weekly Hacked Gadgets contest you will want to have a look at this one. Remember the contest we ran back in October last year? No matter if you were one of the people who figured out that it was a 555 timer or if you needed to work on it for a bit. Now is your change to put that chip to some good use and design something. There is a new contest aptly named the 555 Contest being put on by Chris Gammell and Jeri Ellsworth in which there are four categories to enter, art, complex/extreme minimalistic and utility. Have a look at who wrote comment number one in this blog entry. You got it, that is none other than the Forrest M. Mims III who I remember from the legendary Radio Shack Engineer’s Mini-Notebook line.

HP’s webOS tablet is coming soon, and a new leak provides a more intimate look at the device. According to a leaked spec sheet, the Topaz, as it’s called, will boast a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8660 with built-in Adreno 220 GPU. That package is expected to deliver 1080p video support and integrated GPS.
The model shown sports a 9.7-inch screen with 1024 x 768 resolution, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, two ‘Beats’ audio-branded speakers and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. Backstage: MacBook Air 11” Gets Moshi’s Muse + Speck’s SeeThru Satin
A great feel in the hand is one of the things we look for—and only sometimes find—in MacBook cases, particularly given that the 11” MacBook Air is small and thin enough that you’ll wind up holding it in a palm or under an arm at some point when you’re walking around with it. So it was a non-trivial point when we looked last week at United SGP’s Leather Pouch and noted that the smooth texture of the expensive envelope-style…
