BlazBlue Continuum Shift: Platinum the Trinity Available Spring

While Arc System Works has yet to set an official date for the release of the DLC character Platinum the Trinity on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, sources has it that the character would be release on both platforms this coming Spring. No word on the pricing too, although it’s highly likely that the pricing of the download content would be the same as the previous characters (USD$7).

In other related news, Valkenhayn R Hellsing, the second downloadable character has been re-release on the Xbox 360. After meeting with a bout of problems that had forced Microsoft to bring down the character, the character is finally back on Xbox Live starting this week and has some kind of 50% promotion off the pricing all the way till 10th January. Xbox 360 fans of BBCS would not want to miss out on this special offer!

A teaser image for Bit.Trip FLUX has landed and it’s just as vague as the game’s name reveal and teaser text.

The image was released through Mission in Snowdriftland, which is a Flash-based platformer we reported on earlier this week. You could collect all of today’s snowflakes to unlock it for yourself, but… well… it’s right here.

The previous game in the series, Bit.Trip FATE, also had a teaser image released for it prior to release.

We contacted Gaijin Games about the image’s similarity to the opening moments in Bit.Trip BEAT, and that it looks a little bit like the cross from Bit.Trip CORE flying toward it, but that’s about all we have. We’ll let you know what they say about our theory. Hopefully someone more insightful than us will decipher what this one means — aside from those ideas we’re just as lost this one as we were the last.

Verizon 4G LTE network launches today

Today Verizon Wireless is launching its 4G LTE network to the public. The 4G network is available in 38 markets across the United States (full list) covering a total of 110 million people. Verizon expects most users should see download rates between 5Mbps-12Mbps and upload rates between 2Mbps-5Mbps. We saw similar rates during our initial tests of the network in New York City. Verizon has two data plans available: a 5GB $50 monthly plan and an $80 10GB plan. Overage charges are $10 per 1GB. There are also two devices available that work on the network, the LG VL600 and the Pantech UML290. Each is available for $99.99 with a new contract or for $249.99 without a contract. Verizon expects to talk about its 4G LTE phones during CES next month, and they should be available in mid-2011.

Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G getting Android 2.2 Froyo now

It appears that the official Android 2.2 Froyo update for Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G is starting to roll out - though Sprint has not yet officially acknowledged that. Users supposedly can expect to receive the update directly pushed to their handset by the end of the month, but BriefMobile.com also has posted some instructions for manually obtaining and applying the update. The process is not intended for novices, though, so be warned. When asked for an official comment on the supposed update, a Sprint rep told us "We have not shared specific timing in the release of Android 2.2 for Samsung Epic 4G. We will share specific details when they are available."

Official Android 2.2 Upgrade for the Samsung Epic 4G Is Here

Though we’ve gotten the update in the form of leaks for several US variants of the Samsung Galaxy S, no one has seen an official rollout yet. Sprint has beat everyone in America to the punch – just as they did with the Froyo update for the EVO – and is now offering Android 2.2 for users of the Samsung Epic 4G.

If you haven’t received it over the air, you’ll be able to manually download and install the update yourself. Instructions for that can be had below, courtesy of Brief Mobile. If you are the type who would rather wait for it to be pushed to you, then you’ll be seeing it anywhere between now and the end of the month. The process is really easy, though, so if you have been waiting for this, there should be no reason to not jump on this as soon as possible.

Instructions: Update Android 2.2 Froyo for Epic 4G

Intended for those going from stock Android 2.1 to the latest firmware.

Download the required update.zip file (Mirror: http://www.multiupload.com/EBDH959PPM)
RENAME the file to “update.zip”
Move the file to your storage on the Epic 4G (Mount USB storage and drag the update.zip into root-highest-up folder)
Boot your device into “recovery mode” (if you don’t know how: click here)
Apply the sdcard update.zip from Recovery Mode
Congratulations! You now have Android 2.2.1 Froyo (DK28) on your Samsung Epic 4G from Sprint!

Vuvuzelas Blare on Pirated Copies of Michael Jackson: The Experience for DS

A novel anti-piracy measure baked into the Nintendo DS version of Michael Jackson: The Experience makes copied versions of the game unplayable and taunts gamers with the blaring sound of vuvuzelas.

Instead of “Beat It,” players get “Bleat It.”

The phenomenon was documented by YouTube user ctkxtreme, who posted the video above with the following explanation: “This is Ubisoft’s attempt at anti-piracy to the game. The game is an [Elite Beat Agents] clone, and there’s no notes playing, it freezes when it’s paused, and fucking vuvuzela noises over the music.”

With the annoying noise of the plastic South African horns, the illegally copied game sounds more like a raucous soccer match than a Michael Jackson record.

“The development team worked this feature in as a creative way to discourage any tampering with the retail version of the game,” a representative of Ubisoft, the company that developed the game, told Wired.com in an e-mail Friday.

Piracy has become a major problem for Nintendo because of the ease with which copied games can be played on the handheld device. Unlike videogame consoles, which need to undergo elaborate hardware modifications to play copied software, the handheld DS is comparatively wide open. All one needs to do is to buy a cheap rewritable storage card, download an illegal copy from a file sharing site, and load the card into the DS.

Games can be coded to have the the software check to see if it is running on a legitimate DS cartridge or if the code has been copied to a similar card. Ubisoft would not elaborate, as of press time, about the specific anti-piracy mechanism in Michael Jackson: The Experience.

Battling pirates “has been like a game of cat-and-mouse,” Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told investors in October. He said that while Nintendo does not entirely attribute low software sales to piracy, the company is “beefing up” the copy protection for the Nintendo 3DS, which it will release next year.

The unique anti-piracy measure coded into the Nintendo DS version of Michael Jackson: The Experience, which was released Nov. 23, is just the latest — and perhaps most hilarious — method used to fight illegal copying.

Many games have installed switches that detect pirated copies and act accordingly, like ending the user’s game after 20 minutes. Ubisoft has come under fire multiple times for what players have seen as highly restrictive anti-piracy measures that annoy legitimate users as much or more so than pirates.

But some more-mischievous developers have used tricks similar to the vuvuzela fanfare to mess with pirates.

Batman: Arkham Asylum lets unauthorized users play through the game as if it were a normal copy, with a single exception: Batman’s cape-glide ability doesn’t work, rendering the game impossible to finish — although you might bash your head against it trying to make what are now impossible jumps.

If you pirate Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, brace yourself for an explosion, as your entire base will detonate within 30 seconds of loading the game.

Similar methods of messing with pirates’ heads go back at least to the 1995 Super Nintendo role-playing game Earthbound. It had a slew of anti-piracy gimmicks: In addition to filling copied games with an aggravatingly large amount of enemy encounters, it would freeze up just as the player was about to fight the final boss after 30 hours of adventuring, deleting every saved game on the disk.

Despite such measures, Alex Neuse, whose company Gaijin Games creates the Bit.Trip series for WiiWare, estimates that a whopping 70 percent of copies of his games are pirated.

“Piracy especially hurts small, independent developers who don’t command the sales figures/profits that the bigger companies do,” he said in a statement earlier this year.

Because console manufactures rarely like to play nice, many multi-platform developers are hamstrung in maximizing the level of online competition for their games. While the current form of "reach a certain number of kills" doesn't seem to be the most even playing field, further iteration of these cross-platform competitions could make for some interesting intra-platform dynamics. After all, who doesn't want free stuff first?

The guys at Evernote have just unveiled some new goodies in Evernote 2.0 Beta for Mac.

First up is sharing, and this includes some sweet new features. You can share any notebook, either with named individuals or with the entire world. These public notebooks have a URL (which you can keep to yourself, or tell the world – and search engines – about), and an RSS feed.

If you use Evernote Premium, you can allow others to edit those public notes, as well as view them.

Another new feature is stacking, which borrows slightly from iOS. Evernote users have long been calling for ways to organize large collections of notebooks. If you like to compartmentalize everything you note down, and you have dozens of different notebooks in your database, the sidebar can soon get a little messy.

Stacks, then, are folders for notebooks. Just drag one notebook on top of another to create a new stack (iOS style), and have as many stacks as you wish.

One detail I really like: each computer you use Evernote on remembers which stacks you’ve left open. So you can keep your “work” stack open on your work computer, and your “fun” stack open on your home iMac, and so on. Nice touch.

It won't replace your laptop anytime soon, but it will begin to feel like an essential part of your digital life very, very quickly.
