Gadgets Tech Info For 31.12.2010

Car parks illegally blocking access, you have a forklift, what do you do?

Earlier this week we saw the incompetence of a New York city worker in the snow. Managing to get a front-loader stuck is one thing, but he then goes on to destroy the back end of a Ford Explorer trying to get free.
The idiocy doesn’t stop there, although it does move to a sunnier location. [...]

Gigabyte’s Booktop netbook gets the dual core treatment

It looks like the Gigabyte Q2005 we spotted yesterday isn’t the only member of Gigabyte’s netbook family that’s getting a dual core upgrade. The company has also added the Gigabyte M1005 to its netbook line, with a 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 dual core CPU.

The M1005 is similar to the company’s earlier Booktop netbooks, which means it’s designed to work with a docking station so that you can stick the computer sideways on your desk, plug in a monitor, keyboard, mouse and other peripherals, and use it as desktop computer — one which you can also grab and go for use around the house or on the road.

The computer has a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of memory, a 250GB or 320GB hard drive, 3 USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and audio jacks, and a memory card reader. It has 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, and a 1.3MP webcam. The Gigabyte M1005 has a 4 cell battery.

The docking station also has 3 USB ports, Ethernet, mic, headphone, and D-sub jacks.

Text Messages: No Longer the Domain of Carriers

Although it may stagger some knowing the world has more than five billion mobile device subscriptions, that number is dwarfed by the number of text messages sent worldwide. The International Telecommunications Union estimates 6.1 trillion SMS and texts will be sent this year, while ABI Research figures that number will surpass 7 trillion in 2011. Such numbers are good for the carriers since texts are huge profit generators, but there’s plenty of opportunity for third parties too.

Take textPlus from GOGII, for example, a messaging application for iOS and Android devices available in both a free (ad-supported) and a paid version. The software brings text messaging functionality both to phones and non-phone devices, such as the Apple’s iPad and iPod touch as well as my Samsung Galaxy Tab. Even though phones have their own messaging app, textPlus brings advanced features such as group texts and communities of topic-driven mobile chat. TextPlus may be dwarfed by the overall messaging market, but its numbers for 2010 are still impressive:

The latest iteration of the app, textPlus 4, is adding about 50,000 users per day, with more than 300,000 new users added on Christmas day.
Those new users jumped right in on Christmas: textPlus delivered 190 messages per second for a one-day total of 32 million messages.
Over 5 billion messages will be served by textPlus this year, and the application has seen 11.5 million downloads.

I have an open question in to GOGII about the revenue stream generated by textPlus, as I suspect the majority of users opt for the free, ad-supported version. If that’s the case, the application is at the mercy of users who may or may not click an ad, but those 32 million messages on Christmas gave the company a large number of click-through opportunities, to be sure.

It impresses me that companies such as GOGII are finding ways to monetize services that were once relegated solely to the domain of carriers. Part of the strategy is getting to customers before network operators do.

Case in point: My 10-year-old step-daughter and her friends use messaging apps like this because most of them don’t have phones and yet they want to communicate with their friends the same way we adults do. And parents don’t want to start the kids on phones too early, nor do they want the monthly bill. Instead, kids are using computers, iPod touches and other connected devices, bringing texting to a younger audience before they even get phones.

Perhaps the huge numbers from third-party text messaging services shouldn’t surprise me; I actually can’t remember the last time I sent a text directly through my carrier. Once I got a Google Voice number, I’ve sent all of my texts for free directly through Google using both Android mobile devices and a Google Voice extension in my computer browser. Maybe I’m getting down with the hip, younger crowd again?

Apache: Air Assault

A flight sim that's realistic without being boring.

Man, Apache helicopters are expensive. Do you know how many hospital beds you could buy with that sort of cash? Probably a lot. But hospital beds so rarely launch Hellfire missiles at targets two kilometres away, before slipping into forward-looking infrared mode and shredding tanks with their 30mm cannons that they don't have. Screw hospital beds. Ask any ward patient where they'd rather be sitting and they'll tell you: in the cockpit of an Apache helicopter, gunning down enemy combatants in a fictional version of Afghanistan and causing relatively high degrees of collateral damage due to their inexperience and/or illness.

2010 3-D Movies Supercut, SMS Popup Brings Quicky Text Reply to Android

Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

Read:
Still cheating on video games But in fact the Newsweek analysis just repeats the conventional wisdom it claims to overturn and makes the same old invalid comparison that entertainment-business journalism has been making since video games started making real money. A cursory glance at the pie charts makes it seem as if the gaming industry is not all that far behind films: the games total is $60.6 billion vs. $77.1 billion for movies. But let's take a glance that isn't cursory. My Jerry Saltz Problem In exchange for the brief rush of recognition that you might feel sitting across from Abramovic or posting to Saltz's Facebook page, you grant them much more than their fifteen minutes. You end up ultimately diminished-another brick in a 250,000-word wall-while adding to their cumulative luster. You "need to partake of the blood of others to grow," Saltz writes. And he should know.

Samsung wants to compete against the iPod touch

Until now, all the phone manufacturers were concentrating their energy on creating an iPhone or and iPad killer, with more or less success.
Samsung Apparently decided to try attack the iPod touch also, by making a version of the Galaxy missing the 3G connectivity. Here is a picture:

this device will aim at the very same market and will be both an mp3 player and a platform for Android applications. Not surprisingly, it will be available with 8, 16 and 32 GB of memory, two cameras, one of 3.2 MP in the back and one in the front with a VGA resolution. It will probably be unveiled next week at the CES in Las Vegas.

Chimpanzees Stick to Gender Stereotypes

src="http://blog.geeksaresexytech.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chimpplay.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="375" />

The nature vs nurture debate is one of science’s longer-running questions, and it doesn’t seem likely it will be settled any time soon. But a newly-published study shows the issue isn’t confined to the human race.

Sonya Kahlenberg of Bates College, Maine, and Richard Wrangham of Harvard University have published an article in Current Biology showing evidence of a gender divide among young chimpanzees. It’s the first time such a study has been carried out involving chimps in the wild rather than in captivity.

The study, which was carried out over 14 years, considered the way chimps in Kibale National Park in Uganda used sticks for four main activities: to probe holes that might contain water or honey; as a weapon (either thrown, used to strike, or simply brandished); for play; and as a simple object to carry around.

The study found that young females (data shown below with circles) were much more likely to simply carry a stick than males (shown with triangles), but that the divide largely disappeared once the chimpanzees reached their teens.

src="http://blog.geeksaresexytech.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/chimpdata.jpg" alt="" width="506" height="312" />

The researchers’ theory is that the stick carrying is the equivalent to human children carrying dolls. One point backing that idea is that those chimpanzees that simply carried sticks were much more likely to keep hold of them in day-nests than those who used sticks for other purposes. Another was that among females who carried sticks, the practice consistently ceased when they gave birth for the first time.

That latter point may be the most important. Other case studies have shown that young female chimpanzees are much more likely to ape (sorry…) their mother’s behavior than males are, but by definition that can’t be the explanation here. That suggests that young chimps may be learning the action — and that it should be a female action — purely from social norms among their peers, a practice that has normally only been associated with humans.

Male chimps did have their own use for natural resources: as well as being slightly more likely to use sticks as weapons, they were considerably more likely to use leaves to wipe their genitals after copulation.

WiiPad Slim Plus 7 inch Android tablet giveaway

The WiiPad Slim Plus is a 7 inch Android tablet with an ARM11-based processor and Google Android 2.1 operating system. It’s hardly a state of the art machine, but it comes with the Android Market preloaded and can run many (but not all) modern third party Android apps.

It gets pretty lousy battery life, has  resistive touchscreen display, and a pretty lousy button layout. But as I stated in my recent review, it’s actually a much better device than most of the 7 inch tablets available in its $150 price range.

But if that still seems like a lot of money to spend on an imperfect product, I’ve got a deal for you: I’m giving away the demo unit WiiPad sent me to review.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below. This contest will run through 12:01AM on Wednesday, December 29th.

Because I’m footing the bill for shipping, this contest is limited to US residents. If you live in another country and are willing to cover the costs of shipping, feel free to enter anyway, but I’ll only cover domestic shipping. If you’re selected as winner, I’ll contact you via email, Twitter, or Facebook, so make sure to use valid credentials when you login to leave a comment. If I don’t hear from you within 24 hours I may choose another winner.

15+ free Windows apps to help you tackle Thanksgiving tech support

The holiday season has always been a time for gathering -- but in recent years, it's also been a time when family and friends come bearing gifts of computer troubles. Their computer friends -- people like the Download Squad team and you, our readers -- get asked to do everything from installing RAM upgrades to the annual computer tune-up. We're happy to oblige, of course, because there's a decent chance someone will pay us in beer or baked goods. Cash is welcome too, but never seems to be offered quite as readily.

To make your holiday tech duties a bit easier, I've put together a list of some of my favorite troubleshooting apps for Windows.

Where download links for the files aren't on the application's main page, I've included a link to the appropriate download page. I've provided a handful of FileHippo links as well -- they're an excellent mirror site and they don't surround download links in advertisements or "recommendations."

EnSight 9.2 released

Computational Engineering International (CEI) has announced the release of EnSight 9.2, or more specifically, version 9.2.1a. EnSight 9.2 can be downloaded and installed alongside previous versions of EnSight, and uses the same license key as before. There are several improvements that are incorporated in this new version of EnSight, including:

OpenFOAM direct readerHPC Launch CapabilitiesMore Click-n-go functionalityTouch-n-goMuch faster rendering of annotations when using large modelsImproved Clip Planes thru Polyhedral Cells

The HPC Launch Capabilities looks interesting to me. The idea behind this is that EnSight users should not have to set environment variables, configure SSH port forwarding, and mess around with their own particular flavor of batch queuing systems. Instead, users should be able to launch jobs that will run at their particular site without having to jump through so many hoops. However, their press release says that you will need to contact their support desk in order to schedule time to implement this for your particular setup.

Touch-n-go is a nice feature that is being added to EnSight. Simply move your mouse on top of objects and handles will appear. You can manipulate the handles to resize (for example) the colorbar. This does not require a redraw of the screen. Instead it is just an overlay redraw that is composited back into the image. This works with objects, but does not work with parts (like an isosurface, for example).

The next version of EnSight should be released in another month or so and should have the following improvements:

Support for EnSight DREnSight DR support for Context filesEasier Client-Server Launch

Even better will be EnSight 10.0, which is slated for release in the 2nd quarter of 2011. It will feature a new GUI built on top of PythonQt. That gives EnSight users something to look forward to for the new year. Since I am an EnSight user, I certainly am looking forward to trying out these new features.
