Samsung plans several Windows Phone 7 devices this year

Samsung's intention to create Windows Phone 7 devices hasn't been much of a secret since the FCC approved the Cetus, but the manufacturer has officially announced its plans to release several Windows Phone 7 devices this year. "The addition of Windows Phone 7 devices to Samsung's smartphone portfolio is a significant milestone. Samsung's new Windows Phone 7 based smartphones will play a key role in reinforcing Samsung's leadership in the smartphone market and commitment to providing a range of devices across a variety of platforms," Simon Stanford, head of Samsung mobile for the U.K. and Ireland, said. Stanford didn't provide exact release dates, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a model before the holidays.

Verizon debuts phone trade-in program

Verizon has launched a new phone trade-in program that allows the public to trade in any used devices, regardless of wireless carrier or model. Verizon will value the device and provide a gift card based on its worth. Verizon asks you to enter in your model number, and answer if it can still make calls, if the display works, and if the display is cracked. A perfectly working BlackBerry Bold was appraised at $28 during our initial test. To try the trade-in program for yourself, head to http://www.trade-in.vzw.com.

Over at Karosium there is a DIY DS1821 based Thermostat project. The code is available and I am assuming if there are some requests that the schematic will also be posted.

“After configuration for thermostat mode the center (1Wire DQ) pin becomes a thermostat output pin. Since it’s still an open collector pin it needs a pull up resistor, and since it’s still basically a 4mA GPIO a transistor at least is needed to switch anything meaningful with it.”

Sprint Epic 4G Update Fixes 3G Upload Speeds

There was a recent over the air update for the Samsung Epic 4G and many Epic owners thought it might include a fix for the upload speed problem. This unfortunately was not the case.

Sprint was aware of the issue and may in fact have wanted to include the patch in that OTA, but in all likelihood, it probably just wasn’t ready. Well, things have progressed now to the point where a Sprint Admin on the support forums has confirmed that a fix for this problem will be released on September 30th.

The update will be gradually rolled out and everyone should have it within the next four days. There’s a good chance that this update will include other bug fixes but a change log is not available as of yet though it will probably be made available in the morning.

HP’s webOS Powered Tablet to Be Called ‘PalmPad’?

weboslogoThere have been several tablets to hit the market such as the Apple iPad and even more exepcted to hit he market soon such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab. However, while many of these new tablets are more than capable competitors in the industry, many of them are also running Google’s Android.

Luckily, with the acquisation of Palm earlier this year, HP is free to release a tablet powered by the company’s much loved webOS. Unfortunately, when exactly this is set to go down we don’t know but today we have a small tid bit that goes along with the device.

Apparantly, during an analyst call, HP’s Todd Bradley has went on record as saying that the webOS powered device will actually be called the PalmPad. If this is true, we should be seeing a touchscreen touting device that will directly compete with the iPad out of HP very soon.

When that is, we don’t know, but webOS on a tablet is definitely something we’re interested in.

Ping Shares Your iTunes Library, Now Almost Useful

iTunes Ping
We were pretty skeptical about Ping's usefulness, and, after a short time playing with Apple's iTunes-based social network, our skepticism was borne out. Apple made sharing and liking music through Ping much harder than necessary, and failed to put any serious spam control in place. The result: within days of launch, activity on Ping had slowed to a trickle. The latest update to iTunes 10.0.1 fixes some of these issues by allowing you to share and rate songs directly from your iTunes library. Before, you had to search out tracks in the iTunes store.

The update adds a Ping button next to songs in your library, allowing you to quickly like or post a track, or visit the artist's profile. The same options are also available from the Ping sidebar, which shows your sharing options for the currently highlighted track as well as updates from your friends (on which you can also comment or like). Are the changes enough to convince you to give Ping another chance? Or, is it too little too late for Apple's spam-plagued network to find a home in your already packed social networking repertoire?

Study: we're keeping our mobiles longer, despite sinking prices

Had your current cellphone for the better part of the this century? Turns out you aren't the only one -- according to new research gathered by J.D. Power and Associates, Americans are holding onto their mobiles for longer than ever these days. In fact, the study found that the length of time customers keep their traditional wireless cell phone has increased by 17 percent from 2009, with the average customer holding onto their phone for around 20.5 months. That's the longest period since this study began tracking the data in 1999, when the average was 17.3 months. Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at the company, feels that the recent economic downturn has a lot to do with folks keeping their existing phones longer, while we're guessing that it has to do with existing phones simply being "good enough."

Furthermore, anyone who is even remotely tuned into the mobile world knows that widespread 4G is just around the bend, giving folks reason to hold off on renewing their contract until WiMAX / LTE comes to their carrier of choice. Curiously, phone prices are lower than ever before, which should mean that it's even less expensive to upgrade now than in the past. Of course, none of that matters if your existing phone contract isn't up (or you aren't due for a discounted renewal), and the savings on the hardware is likely being devoured by the extra fees we're paying for messaging and data. So, are you in the "run it till it dies" camp, or are you wondering who on Earth this survey (shown in full after the break) is referring to?

Ding Dong, you have mail

ding-dong-you-have-mail

David from uC Hobby had a wireless doorbell but the remote was lost, instead of tossing it in the garbage he re-purposed it. By adding a few components to allow a small signal to activate the chime coil this can now be used by almost anything electronic as a cool indication. I would have used it to ding dong when I had a new email but David decided to hook it up to a Linux box to ring whenever someone mentioned uC Hobby on IRC. Goes to show that almost anything can be made even cooler than the original purpose. There is code posted so you too can make your own internet door bell.

Kawkaba 3000 electric car concept

Kawkaba 3000 electric car concept

Concepts of electric cars are dime a dozen, and we have the Kawkaba 3000 electric car this time round to keep the industry on their toes. Designed by Hussein, this will turn heads if it ever makes it to the road simply because it has a cute form factor, although you won't see it win any drag races. The body of the Kawkaba 3000 is made out of fiberglass as well as silicon, helping it deliver unprecedented toughness and flexibility on four wheels. Since it is extremely light (as compared to traditional vehicles), energy outflow is decreased so that battery life can be lengthened until the next recharge. Nice, but will we be able to see it hit the market anytime soon? Highly unlikely as most of the other vehicle manufacturers have their own plans up their sleeves.

The New Yorker for iPad: Finally, A Magazine Goes Digital and Stays True to Itself

new yorker on ipadHey Condé Nast! Did someone hear our plaintive cries about your app ventures? Because we're happy to report that The New Yorker iPad app, released today, resoundingly does not suck.

Well, it's got some issues (of which the editors seem to be aware), but we'll save those for last. We were worried when we heard that The New Yorker was coming to iPad, because it's a medium that is simply asking to be exploited in the wrong way. TNY has always been a text-based mag that's sparse on the pics (with the exception of occasional photo essays), and we feared that the iPad begs developers to go crazy with interactive features, videos, game-engines and other dreck that many readers simply don't want when they're trying to read a story as a story. The New Yorker app shows restraint, and we're glad for it.

Halo Reach's Latest Weekly Challenge is Legendary Co-Op

If you're addicted to Bungie's credit system in Halo Reach, you've probably been paying close attention to the daily and weekly challenges they put out in the game.  These challenges provide a ton of bonus credits for those that complete them and to this point, Bungie has done a pretty good job of balancing these between all the game modes including single player, versus, and co-op.

The new weekly challenge just went live - and while the first week was single player focused and the second week was versus, the third week's challenge is all co-op.  For a sweet 2500 credits all you need to do is complete one mission of the game on Legendary with at least one co-op partner.   Remember - if you're looking for someone to play with, especially since we're still waiting on campaign matchmaking - you can hit up the Co-Optimus forums!

Tools that power Tiger Woods Online win prestigious Wall Street Journal award

The Wall Street Journal named game-tool developer Unity Technologies its 2010 Technology Innovation Award for software.

A 3D toolset for online development, Unity signed a multiyear deal with Electronic Arts on September 28 to use Unity for upcoming console, mobile, and Web titles. EA is already using Unity to power Tiger Woods Online, its free browser golf simulation. Unity is designed to work for all the major console and mobile platforms, though currently, developers are using it more for mobile and online games than console products.

This is the 10th year for the Wall Street Journal tech innovation awards. Unity Technologies is the only company in the video-game space to win an award this year.

Crazy, beautiful human being designs 3D raycaster engine for Arduino

Look, not everybody gets to be super smart. Some of us have to struggle along with our mediocre intellects and just bask in the glory of genius. Like this time: we ran into Adam Wolf at Maker Faire in New York, and while many burgeoning hackers were using their Arduino to flip LEDs on and off in vaguely interesting ways, Adam was showing off a 3D raycaster engine. It's like witnessing some sort of alternate history where Wolfenstein 3D came out for Atari first. Just to give you an idea of the technical challenge: half of the Arduino's memory is used up by the frame buffer alone! The game is controlled and displayed using the Video Game Shield Arduino add-on from Wayne and Layne (Adam is Wayne), which enables RCA video output and compatibility with Wii nunchucks for dual analog control. Adam actually plans to add enemies and make a full game out of his engine, just to rub it in. Need some visual proof to believe all this? Check out a video after the break. The Video Game Shield will be up for purchase on September 29 for around $22, or you can buy it at the Maker Faire this weekend.

Apple iPad set for a fantastic 2011

The iPad has had a great 2010, but 2011 could be an even better year for the Apple tablet.

With the plethora of rival tablets heading our way, it’s sometimes easy to forget that the Apple iPad is on the market and doing fantastically well. The tablet market would have still probably taken off in a big way even without the iPad but Apple’s involvement and investment clearly paved the way for other tech manufacturers to join the party.

2010 has been a great year for the iPad so far, and we haven’t even entered the holiday season when the Apple tablet is likely to be the must-have item for anyone even slightly geeky. However, 2011 could be even better for the iPad, even though it’s the year the iPad will face its truly challenging competition.

There are three main reasons why this could be the case, as indicated by VentureBeat.

First, and potentially foremost, is the number of corporate customers Apple could pick up over the next year. Apple hasn’t been a big player in the enterprise sector until now, but the iPad is changing things rapidly. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster suggests that half of the Fortune 100 companies are now either testing or using the iPad for their corporate needs. If accurate then Apple could shift up to 21 million iPads in 2011.

Then there are the sales possibilities in emerging markets. The iPad is now available to buy in China, which is a very large, and potentially very profitable market for Apple to venture in to.

Thirdly, there is the fact that the iPad is getting more mainstream by the day. Best Buy will be stocking the device in all of its 1,093 this week, with Target joining them in early October.

I expect the iPad to fly off store shelves between now and the end of 2010, but it’s 2011 that could truly be the year of the iPad. Unless, of course, one of the many contenders to Apple’s throne can step up to the plate with a tablet as affordable, usable, and sexy as the iPad. Fingers crossed. Because competition is good.

DeNA Invests In Office Heroes Developer Astro Ape

Japanese firm DeNA has invested an undisclosed amount in mobile social games developer Astro Ape Studios (Office Heroes) -- its fourth investment in a U.S. company in the past year. As part of this transaction, Astro Ape will create titles for DeNA's MiniNation mobile platform.

Based in Edison, New Jersey and founded in March 2009, Astro Ape primarily develops for iDevices. Its released titles so far include Office Heroes, a free game in which players climb the corporate ladder while customizing their office; and iGotBling, an app inviting users to wear their iPhone their belts or necklaces.

This backing follows three other investments DeNA's made recently in the U.S. -- the Tokyo-based company financed Burlingame-based OpenFeint developer Aurora Feint, acquired Bellevue-based mobile social network developer IceBreaker, and most recently bought Mountain View-based developer Gameview Studios.

DeNA purchased Gameview with plans to have the developer work with MiniNation, its smartphone-focused subsidiary and iPhone social network, too. The firm says these moves are part of its "X-device, X-border" strategy, which aims to " promote game development across different devices and national borders".

In Japan, the company runs mobile social gaming community Mobage-town, which has over 20 million subscribers. Last month, the firm reported a 175 percent increase in revenues to $279 million for the first quarter of 2010 (ending June), and it expects to generate $1 billion by the end of the fiscal year.

"Astro Ape represents yet another step in our X-border X-device strategy of bringing battery-draining, addictive social game experiences to consumers worldwide," says DeNA CEO Tomoko Namba.

Namba continues, "Today's investment is another step in our process of becoming a mainstream American gaming brand through proprietary content and empowering others to prosper on our gaming platform. Despite the number of current deals we've announced in the U.S., we're just getting started."

Dave The Funky Shoulder Monkey Has Elmo In His Sights This Christmas Season

By Andrew Liszewski

I’ve lost count how many years Elmo has been on the ‘most wanted’ list for Christmas, but this year a small robotic chimp named Dave is hoping to be the source of holiday shopping-related stampedes. Tech Digest recently had a demo of Dave, who’s designed to strap to your shoulder and perform one of 30 different actions with accompanying monkey sounds thanks to an included wireless remote. And besides entertaining kids of all ages, he also seems like the perfect sidekick for pirates who might be allergic to the real thing. He’ll be available for ~$40 (£24.99) in the UK at least, and since you’ll be able to find him at Toys ‘R Us stores hopefully it means he’ll be available in North America at some point as well.

Motorola Team Already Hard at Work on Update to Fix Messaging Issues in Droid X Froyo Update

This image has no alt text

droid-x-front-back

The Motorola Droid X was updated to Android 2.2 and the world rejoiced. Rejoiced until the bugs started showing up, that is. One of the most glaring issues that many users have been experiencing involves the ordering of incoming and outgoing text messages. Instead of displaying messages from the top down in order of latest sent and received, texts remain static in the position they first appeared on the list. Compounding this issue are reports of intermittent SMS notifications. There is a developing thread over at the Motorola support forums that details the issue further, and it looks like Motorola heard the moans of X owners as a response has been issued on third page of the thread that a fix is already in the works.

Of course, there is no further information available other than that Moto’s engineering team has isolated the issue and devised a fix. When that fix will be available via update isn’t known at this time.

Have any DX users out there experience this text messaging issue? Sound off in the comments below.

Samsung Fascinate for Verizon - Galaxy S Android smartphone review

Blockbuster Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

The movie rental store Blockbuster which seemed to always be busy on a Friday or Saturday night doling out movie rentals and selling what amounts to essentially concession stand foods like popcorn and chocolate bars has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

It’s not really much of a surprise as the company has been hemorrhaging money for a while now. As part of their announcement, the company has also said that they will be closing up to 800 stores which pretty much means the whole kit and kaboodle. Blockbuster has seen strong competition in the last few years and their bricks and mortar operation really is an antiquated model of operation in todays society.

Sure there are still lots of people that like to go to the store to rent movies, but the big money in home entertainment is in digital streaming. We’ll have to see what Blockbuster looks like after they wrap up their bankruptcy filing, but somehow you have to have a feeling they will try and emulate Netflix and go with a more online presence with a streaming future.
