Chimpanzees Stick to Gender Stereotypes

The nature vs nurture debate is one of science’s longer-running questions, and it doesn’t seem likely it will be settled any time soon. But a newly-published study shows the issue isn’t confined to the human race.

Sonya Kahlenberg of Bates College, Maine, and Richard Wrangham of Harvard University have published an article in Current Biology showing evidence of a gender divide among young chimpanzees. It’s the first time such a study has been carried out involving chimps in the wild rather than in captivity.

The study, which was carried out over 14 years, considered the way chimps in Kibale National Park in Uganda used sticks for four main activities: to probe holes that might contain water or honey; as a weapon (either thrown, used to strike, or simply brandished); for play; and as a simple object to carry around.

The study found that young females (data shown below with circles) were much more likely to simply carry a stick than males (shown with triangles), but that the divide largely disappeared once the chimpanzees reached their teens.

The researchers’ theory is that the stick carrying is the equivalent to human children carrying dolls. One point backing that idea is that those chimpanzees that simply carried sticks were much more likely to keep hold of them in day-nests than those who used sticks for other purposes. Another was that among females who carried sticks, the practice consistently ceased when they gave birth for the first time.

That latter point may be the most important. Other case studies have shown that young female chimpanzees are much more likely to ape (sorry…) their mother’s behavior than males are, but by definition that can’t be the explanation here. That suggests that young chimps may be learning the action — and that it should be a female action — purely from social norms among their peers, a practice that has normally only been associated with humans.

Male chimps did have their own use for natural resources: as well as being slightly more likely to use sticks as weapons, they were considerably more likely to use leaves to wipe their genitals after copulation.

GDC 2011 Adds Biz, Production Talks From Sony, WB, CCP Veterans

Organizers of the 2011 Game Developers Conference have revealed Production and Business & Management Track talks spanning Sony, Warner Bros. and CCP veterans for the Main Conference at the 25th edition of the industry's leading digital entertainment event next March.

EnSight 9.2 released

Computational Engineering International (CEI) has announced the release of EnSight 9.2, or more specifically, version 9.2.1a. EnSight 9.2 can be downloaded and installed alongside previous versions of EnSight, and uses the same license key as before. There are several improvements that are incorporated in this new version of EnSight, including:

The HPC Launch Capabilities looks interesting to me. The idea behind this is that EnSight users should not have to set environment variables, configure SSH port forwarding, and mess around with their own particular flavor of batch queuing systems. Instead, users should be able to launch jobs that will run at their particular site without having to jump through so many hoops. However, their press release says that you will need to contact their support desk in order to schedule time to implement this for your particular setup.

Touch-n-go is a nice feature that is being added to EnSight. Simply move your mouse on top of objects and handles will appear. You can manipulate the handles to resize (for example) the colorbar. This does not require a redraw of the screen. Instead it is just an overlay redraw that is composited back into the image. This works with objects, but does not work with parts (like an isosurface, for example).

The next version of EnSight should be released in another month or so and should have the following improvements:

Even better will be EnSight 10.0, which is slated for release in the 2nd quarter of 2011. It will feature a new GUI built on top of PythonQt. That gives EnSight users something to look forward to for the new year. Since I am an EnSight user, I certainly am looking forward to trying out these new features.

Apple has released iTunes 10.1.1, the latest version of its digital media management software. According to Apple’s release notes, the update addresses an issue where some music videos may not play on Macs equipped with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 or 9600 graphics, resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit when deleting a playlist that has the iTunes Sidebar showing, fixes a problem where iTunes may unexpectedly quit when connecting an iPod…

DSi Mode flashcart announced

DSi Mode flashcart announced:

Team Cyclops, once the leading DS flashcart manufacturer, has come back with a vengeance, announcing a new device that supports “DSi mode” features — a first for these “illegal game copiers”.

What this means is that homebrew software running on a CycloDS iEvolution will have the potential to access a DSi’s camera, SD card, additional CPU/RAM, . The company even promises to “gladly supply legitimate homebrew application coders with a free iEVO unit to aid development”.

Team Cyclops says the flashcart eventually support DSi features in commercially released DSi-enhanced games, so that victory for homebrew fans also benefits pirates. It’s unclear if the 3DS and its “sophisticated” anti-piracy measures will be able to defeat whatever hack/workaround the iEVO uses, but Nintendo has only a few months to come up with a way to shut the flashcart down (assuming whatever protections it already has in place can’t neutralize the device).

Oh, and for those wondering about that round white gadget, I believe it’s for updating the iEvo’s firmware.

WikiLeaks Exposes Kim Jong-Il's Son as Gaming Geek

There have been a few bizarre tidbits in the WikiLeaks data dump, particularly about China hacking Google and how Iran's neighbors have been quietly pushing the U.S. to take military action against the country. Then there is this little gossipy morsel about the middle son of the world's most unpredictable leader, Kim Jong-Il. A 2008 cable discussing possible successors to Il surmised that Kim Jong-chol was not in the running to become the next iron-fisted oppressor of North Korea because he "is more interested in video games than governing."



A video game obsession seems like a perfectly logical generational step for Choi to take, considering Il's widely reported film fanaticism (in 2003 he was said to have had a collection of over 20,000 films). Oddly, we would have thought that spending hours a day playing 'StarCraft' would have made Choi a rather attractive choice. If he can handle the Zerg, the U.S. should pose no problem.

Toshiba launching three tablets in 2011

Toshiba is gearing up to launch three new tablets in 2011, all sporting different operating systems. Let’s hope these succeed where the last ones didn’t.

Toshiba released two tablets in 2010, both of which failed to really grab anyone’s attention. The Libretto was only released in limited numbers, was too expensive, and a bit of a novelty, really. And the Folio 100 was, well, just a bad product, with so many people returning theirs that a big chain of stores pulled it from their shelves altogether.

Realizing that the tablet sector is growing in stature and importance, Toshiba isn’t giving up after this initial failure. Instead, according to Digitimes, the Japanese company is planning on unveiling three new tablets for release next year. They are highly likely to make their first appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January.

Like the rest of the industry, Toshiba doesn’t seem able to make its mind up as to which OS is the best for tablets, and so each of the three will feature a different one of Windows 7, Google Android, and the Google Chrome OS. Two will have 10.1-inch screens, the other an 11.6-inch screen. All of these tablets are being positioned as extensions to the PC market.

However, a further rumor suggests Toshiba is working on a range of 7-inch tablets, these being handled by the company’s handset department. Which would obviously suggest these will be nearer to smartphones than notebooks.

I suspect these tablets will be a lot better than the two previous tablets from Toshiba. The company will have likely learned from its mistakes and will try to put out a product much closer to the Apple iPad this time around, because, like it or not, that tablet has set the bar for all the others to try and emulate.

I like Toshiba as a company, so let’s just hope its tablets live up to the brand name.
